Discipleship

Thoughts for Young Men by J.C. Ryle

There are four great temptations that plague most young men: sloth, lust, love of pleasure, and peer pressure. J.C. Ryle — the last of the great Puritans — tackles each of these subjects with a tenderness and tact which is unsurpassed. First written toward the end of the nineteenth century, it remains to this day the most relevant and helpful book on the subject in print. I was first introduced to Ryle about fifteen years ago, and he remains a favorite teacher on personal holiness.

The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges

“Be holy, for I am holy,” commands God to his people. But holiness is something that is often missing in the Christian’s daily life. According to Jerry Bridges, that’s because we’re not exactly sure what our part in holiness is. In The Pursuit of Holiness, he helps us see clearly just what we should rely on God to do — and what we should accept
responsibility for ourselves.
